Fifteen quartets written across more than three decades form a musical diary without words. Public history and private experience run alongside one another: abrupt contrasts, recurring gestures and silences return from one work to the next, changed by time.

Presented over five concerts, the cycle invites the audience to follow those connections rather than encounter each quartet in isolation. An apparently simple phrase can recall a work heard the evening before; a silence can acquire a different meaning through memory.

The fiftieth anniversary of Shostakovich’s death offers the occasion, but the centre of the project is listening: remaining with one composer long enough to hear a language transform.

French Touch is built around colour as a form of musical thought. Ravel, Cras and Debussy do not use timbre as decoration: changes of light, density and perspective shape the direction of the music itself.

The programme moves between different chamber formations. Ravel’s septet opens the sound beyond the quartet; Cras brings together distinct instrumental voices, while Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie and Trio Sonata reduce the ensemble and bring gesture, breath and detail to the foreground.

The result is not a portrait of a single style, but a changing landscape: transparent at times, physical at others, held together by the attention each composer gives to colour.

Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Italian chamber music followed paths often overshadowed by the country’s operatic tradition. These piano quintets reveal another landscape: dense writing, lyrical impulse and a continuous exchange between European forms and an Italian sense of line.

With Enrico Pace, the piano is not placed in front of the quartet but inside the conversation. Wolf-Ferrari, Martucci and Respighi become three perspectives on the same question: how to write Italian instrumental music while looking beyond national borders.

The meeting of Quartetto Guadagnini and Faccini Piano Duo grew from a wish to work with a broader palette: the sustained line of the strings meets the orchestral range of two pianists at one instrument.

In Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, distant melodies return in a new light; in Roman Festivals, Rome becomes movement, crowds and collective ritual. With de Falla’s El amor brujo, the music moves to Andalusia, through dance, mystery and repetitions that resemble spells.

Three scores are connected by one question: how can music bring a time, a place or a legend back into the present act of listening?
