Italian piano quintets: a dialogue built on difference
Stefano Crise reviews Quartetto Guadagnini and Enrico Pace in Martucci and Wolf-Ferrari at Teatro Miela in Trieste.
“The differences generated richness and imagination, bringing forth an original, intense performance, charged with a feverish tension built on constant mutual listening.”
At Teatro Miela in Trieste, the Cromatismi 4.0 series brought together two central works in the revival of Italian instrumental music: Giuseppe Martucci’s Piano Quintet in C major, Op. 45, and Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s Piano Quintet in D-flat major, Op. 6.
Writing in Archi Magazine, Stefano Crise focused on the encounter between distinct interpretative identities. He described the quartet’s timbral cohesion and the constant mutual listening through which the five musicians shaped a clear, vital and narratively compelling reading.
The review also highlighted the programme itself: two different routes through Italian chamber music between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, restored to the stage with analytical clarity and expressive purpose.
