A day with Quartetto Guadagnini: at the heart of sound

Claudio Rampini enters a rehearsal day and observes listening, instruments and the work behind a performance.

“For me it was a beautiful, profound and memorable experience, at the heart of music and instruments.”

Rather than attending a concert, violin maker Claudio Rampini chose to spend a normal working day with Quartetto Guadagnini. His account follows the ensemble through rehearsal, conversation and the practical adjustments required when playing unfamiliar instruments.

The occasion was connected with a performance at Cremona’s Museo del Violino on the quartet of instruments made by Marino Capicchioni in 1937. Schubert’s Quartettsatz and Dvořák’s American Quartet become points of observation for the balance between individual sound, active listening and collective decision-making.

The result is neither a conventional review nor a formal interview, but a close-range portrait of chamber music in the making. Rampini’s perspective as a violin maker gives equal weight to musicians, instruments and the quality of attention linking them.
